Appomattox is probably best known as the location where Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Granton April 9, 1865, which essentially ended theAmerican Civil War. The area is preserved as Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. The town was named for the Appomattox River. The river itself was named after the Appomattox Native American tribe, historically based in the coastal area before English settlers arrived.
